Many city ordinances call for and require a business to retain a designated fire-watchman during times that their alarms are inoperable or down. This could be due to being a new install, being repaired/damaged or while the system is being serviced/tested.

A fire watchman is charged with the responsibility of being the active alarm while the actual alarm is disabled. In the event a fire or fire-related incident occurs, the fire watchman's duty is to contact emergency services and document all vital information prior, during and at the conclusion of the incident.
